Science Teaching Scholarships

For current UNI Science Teaching majors

This will make you eligible for all Science Teaching scholarships, which are available for biology teaching, chemistry teaching, earth science teaching, physics teaching, all science teaching and middle/junior high science teaching majors.

Deadline: February 15

Complete application includes:

  1. UNIversity Scholarship Application for Undergraduate Students (formerly Online Common Scholarship Application for Undergraduates)
  2. Statement of teaching goals. Upload My Statement (do NOT forget this!)
  3. Submit Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (required for the Floyd and Orhtmann Scholarships)
  4. List the names of 2 professors who could be contacted by the committee for a recommendation.

Science education offers the following four undergraduate tuition scholarships for pre-service science teachers. The deadline for online application for each of these scholarships is February 1.

Grace Ohrtman Endowed Scholarship

The Grace Ohrtman Scholarship was created to support future Iowa science educators by providing funds that can be used for room, board and tuition.

Qualifications

Financial aid will be considered. Students must have the intention to teach in Iowa for at least three years upon graduation and must be science teaching majors in the one of following departments: biology, chemistry & biochemistry, earth science, physics and science education.

James and Cynthia Kenyon Endowed Scholarship

The James and Cynthia Kenyon Scholarship provides support for students who are graduates of Cedar Falls High School, with a major in natural sciences as listed below, with a preference for those who are science teaching majors.

Qualifications

Recipient shall be a graduate of Cedar Falls High School in Cedar Falls, IA, and a major in the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences, with preference given to a science education (teaching) major: biology, chemistry & biochemistry, earth science, physics and science education.

Gary and Myrna Floyd Endowed Scholarship

The Gary and Myrna Scholarship is for students in science teaching who demonstrate merit and have financial need.

Qualifications

Must have a FAFSA on file with Financial Aid.
Students must demonstrate merit and financial need with preference given to students entering their senior year and majoring in all science teaching, middle/junior high science teaching or biology teaching. Students must also major in one of the following departments: biology or science education.

Albert A. Potter Endowed Science Scholarship

The Albert A. Potter Science Scholarship provides support for pre-service science educators.

Qualifications

A minimum of 65 credit hours (completed/enrolled in) and a declared science (teaching) major is required from one of the four following departments: biology, chemistry & biochemistry, earth science, physics and science education. A declaration of, and official admittance to, the teacher education program at UNI. Consideration given to overall GPA, GPA in the teaching major and Professional Education sequence, financial need and indication of promise of successful secondary science teaching.

College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences Scholarships

For current College of Natural Science majors

Deadline: February 15

To be eligible for general CHAS scholarships, you must complete the following

  1. UNIversity Scholarship Application for Undergraduates
  2. Provide a statement of educational and career goals. Upload My Statement.
  3. Answer the two questions below:
    • Are you planning on enrolling for graduate study? (Yes/No)
    • Are you a U.S. citizen? (Yes/No)

The following scholarship requires additional materials (as stated below):

C.W. Lantz Scholarship

Qualifications

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist and encourage worthy senior students in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, science and science education.

Requirements

Applicants must have at least a 3.00 GPA overall and must have completed a minimum of 48 hours (at least 32 at UNI) at the time of application.

Additional Application Materials

Two letters of recommendation from faculty in your major or minor department (provide names).

Student First Scholarship

Qualifications

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist and encourage a worthy student majoring in the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences.

Requirements

Applicants must have at least a 3.00 GPA overall.

Clifford McCollum Scholarship

Qualifications

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize undergraduate student scholarships and service in the College of Natural Sciences and to acknowledge the potential for future professional development.

Requirements

Applicants must have a major in the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences, at least a 3.25 GPA overall, and a minimum of 90 semester hours of credit (at least 45 from UNI).

Irene M. Thompson Scholarship

Qualifications

All undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences who are continuing at UNI are eligible.

Requirements

Contribution as a student to the total program of the college and department is the primary criterion.

Streitberger Mohr Scholarship

Qualifications

Provides support for sophomore or junior students who demonstrate merit and financial need. 

Requirements

Applicants must have a major in Science Education for middle grades through high school and be a resident of the state of Iowa. 

TEACH Grants

Qualifications

All undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences who are continuing at UNI are eligible. Please contact UNI Financial Aid at (319) 273-2700 for more information about the TEACH Grant.

Requirements

  1. Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  2. Complete FASFA.
  3. Score above the 75th percentile on college admissions test (ACT or SAT) or mantain a GPA of at least 3.25.
  4. Be enrolled as an undergraduate (first B.A. only) or graduate.
  5. Be enrolled in coursework that is necessary to begin a career in teaching in an identified high-need field.
  6. Sign an agreement to teach full-time in a low-income school and in a high-need field for four academic years within eight calendar years after graduation.

Funding

Recipients can receive up to $4,000/year for four years as an undergraduate and two years as a graduate.
