UNI Requirements

Requirements for Teaching Approval in Secondary School Science

To be recommended by UNI for approval for a science teaching endorsement in a given subject area (secondary, 5-12, teaching license), a student must complete a teaching major or minor in that subject area. The requirements for the teaching areas in science are listed below.
Science content courses that count for endorsement must be courses that count towards science departmental majors/minors .

BIOLOGY -a Biology teaching major including 820:190g (Orientation to Science Teaching), 820:196 (Current Technologies in Science Teaching), 840:193g (Current Curricula in the Life Sciences) and 840:197 (Undergraduate Practicum in Biology Teaching)
  - a Biology teaching minor including 820:190g (Orientation to Science Teaching), 820:196 (Current Technologies in Science Teaching), 840:193g (Current Curricula in the Life Sciences) with another science teaching major or with 30 hrs. in the broad area of science
CHEMISTRY - a Chemistry teaching major including 820:190g (Orientation to Science Teaching), 820:196 (Current Technologies in Science Teaching), and 820:193g (Current Curricula in the Physical Sciences)
  - a Chemistry teaching minor with another science teaching major or with 30 hrs. in the broad area of science
EARTH SCIENCE - an Earth Science teaching major including 820:190g (Orientation to Science Teaching), 820:196 (Current Technologies in Science Teaching), and 820:193g(Current Curricula in the Physical Sciences)
  - an Earth Science teaching minor with another science teaching major or with 30 hrs. in the broad area of science
   
GENERAL SCIENCE- 820:190g (Orientation to Science Teaching) 3 hrs.

820:196 (Current Technologies in Science Teaching)
2 hrs.
one current curricula course (820:194g, 840:193g, 860:193g, 880:193g)
3 hrs.
Content courses from the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics
24 hrs.
32 hrs.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE- 820:190g (Orientation to Science Teaching)
3 hrs.
820:196 (Current Technologies in Science Teaching)
2 hrs.
one current curricula course (820:194g, 860:193g, or 880:193g )
3 hrs.
Content courses from chemistry, Earth science and physics 24 hrs.
24 hrs.
32 hrs.

PHYSICS - a Physics teaching major including 820:190g (Orientation to Science Teaching), 820:196
Current Technologies in Science Teaching), and 820:193g (Current Curricula in the Physical Sciences)
- a Physics teaching minor with another science teaching major or with 30 hrs. in the broad area of science
ALL SCIENCE – Middle/Junior High School Science major plus a Middle Level Education Major
ELEMENTARY SCIENCE ENDORSEMENT (K-8)
- a Basic Science Minor including science courses that fulfill the 24 hr content requirement: Life Science 6 hrs.: Physical Science (defined as Physics and Chemistry) 12 hrs.
Note: additional minimal endorsements may be obtained by teacher candidate request but are not part of the "official" UNI recommendation.
